Systematic position. The Mordvilko root aphid (Trama mordvilkoi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that spends its entire life cycle underground, feeding exclusively on the root systems of various herbaceous plants, making it a difficult pest to detect and manage in field conditions.

Host plants. This species primarily infests plants in the Asteraceae family. It poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops, such as Jerusalem artichoke and globe artichoke. Furthermore, wild species within the Asteraceae family often act as hosts, providing a reservoir for the aphid to persist in the soil between cropping seasons.

Biology and life cycle. Trama mordvilkoi reproduces through parthenogenesis, enabling rapid population growth in favorable soil conditions. The aphid exhibits a strong symbiotic relationship with ants. The ants protect the aphids from natural enemies and actively transport them to new root systems, effectively facilitating the spread of the infestation throughout the field.

Damage and harm. The aphids aggregate on the roots, piercing the tissue and extracting plant sap. This feeding activity causes stunted growth, chlorosis, and general plant weakness. Furthermore, the feeding sites become vulnerable to secondary infections, such as root rot pathogens, which can severely compromise the plant's health and lead to substantial yield losses.
