Description
Systematic position: The American manatee (Trichechus manatus) belongs to the order Sirenia and the family Trichechidae. As a large herbivorous aquatic mammal, its presence in managed water systems often creates conflicts with agricultural water usage and cultivation of aquatic crops.
Affected crops: Manatees primarily feed on aquatic vegetation. They are known to graze on rice fields, wild rice crops, and other commercial aquatic plants cultivated in warm, shallow waters. Furthermore, they can consume vegetation used to stabilize canal banks, which indirectly affects the surrounding agricultural land.
Biology and life cycle: These mammals are slow-moving and spend their time grazing in estuaries and irrigation canals. They reach sexual maturity at a few years of age and have a low reproductive rate. Despite their slow reproduction, their high daily food requirement makes them a significant factor in local aquatic ecosystem management.
Nature of damage and pest status: The damage is twofold: direct consumption of aquatic vegetation and structural interference with water infrastructure. Manatees can clog irrigation pipes, damage sluice gates, and destabilize canal banks through their movement and feeding habits, leading to increased costs for maintenance and water flow regulation.
Control measures: Because the American manatee is a protected species, all management efforts must focus on exclusion and non-lethal deterrents. Recommended measures include:
