Trichogaster pectoralis, commonly referred to as the snakeskin gourami, is a species of the family Osphronemidae. While traditionally recognized in aquarium and food fisheries, it is classified as a pest in certain agro-ecosystems due to its disruptive impact on rice cultivation and water management systems.
The primary crop impacted by this species is paddy rice. During the flood phase of rice production, snakeskin gourami populations can cause significant damage by feeding on emerging shoots and disrupting the root stability of young rice plants, which severely hinders crop establishment.
The biology of this species is characterized by its ability to survive in low-oxygen water through its labyrinth organ. The reproductive cycle, involving the construction of bubble nests among rice stalks, allows the fish to proliferate rapidly in agricultural irrigation canals, leading to high population densities within the fields.
The pest potential of this species is largely due to its foraging behavior and physical impact on the environment. By uprooting delicate rice seedlings and modifying the sediment structure through burrowing and constant feeding, they cause direct crop loss and compromise the integrity of field embankments.
Mitigation strategies focus on preventing the entry of fish into production areas. Effective measures include the installation of fine-mesh screening at irrigation inlets and the strategic draining of fields to disrupt the lifecycle of the fish. Integrated pest management, including seasonal harvesting of the fish, is also employed to reduce population pressure on rice crops.
