It is important to clarify that Trichogramma is not a plant pest; rather, it is a highly beneficial parasitoid wasp widely used in integrated pest management. These tiny insects serve as natural enemies to numerous agricultural pests by parasitizing their eggs before they can hatch into crop-damaging larvae.
Taxonomically, the genus Trichogramma belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Trichogrammatidae. These micro-hymenopterans are specialists in locating and attacking the eggs of various Lepidoptera species, making them a cornerstone of biological control programs globally.
The biology of the Trichogramma revolves around the host egg. The female wasp locates the eggs of pests and deposits her own eggs inside them. The developing Trichogramma larva consumes the contents of the host egg, completing its development within a week or two, depending on environmental temperature and humidity conditions.
The primary crops protected by this parasitoid include corn, cotton, sugar cane, tomatoes, and cabbage. By attacking the egg stage of moths like the European corn borer, bollworm, and various cutworms, Trichogramma prevents the subsequent infestation of larvae, thereby reducing the need for chemical insecticide applications.
Field application requires careful planning to ensure the timing of the release coincides with the peak egg-laying activity of the targeted pest.
