Trichoniscus belongs to the order Isopoda, specifically the family Trichoniscidae. These organisms are terrestrial crustaceans that require a humid environment for respiration and survival, making them common inhabitants of damp soils, greenhouses, and garden debris.
These pests primarily target young plants, seedlings, and sprouted seeds within greenhouses and nurseries. They feed on tender plant tissues, including soft root systems, lower leaves in direct contact with damp soil, and developing fruits like strawberries or cucumbers that rest on the ground surface.
The biology of Trichoniscus is characterized by nocturnal habits and a strong dependency on moisture. During the day, they hide under soil clumps, organic matter, or within cracks in the earth. Their life cycle involves several developmental stages where larvae resemble smaller versions of adults, allowing them to rapidly increase their population under stable greenhouse conditions.
Damage caused by these crustaceans involves irregular grazing patterns, resulting in pits and shallow ulcers on plant leaves and fruits. In cases of severe infestation, they can consume the stems of young seedlings near the soil line, leading to plant death. Furthermore, they act as vectors for fungal pathogens, promoting rot on vulnerable or injured tissue.

Keeping the greenhouse clean by removing old leaves and decaying organic waste is essential to deprive the pests of their shelters.
