Cabbage looper

The cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Erebidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is widely recognized for its "looping" movement, caused by the absence of some prolegs in the middle of the abdomen, which is a diagnostic feature of its larval stage.

This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a broad range of plant species. Common hosts include members of the Brassicaceae family (cabbage, broccoli, kale), as well as Solanaceae (tomatoes, peppers), Cucurbitaceae (cucumbers), and field crops like soybeans, cotton, and tobacco. Its ability to feed on such diverse plants makes it a year-round threat in warm climates.

The life cycle of the cabbage looper involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid individually on the underside of leaves. Larvae progress through five instars, growing significantly with each molt. In warmer regions, several generations can overlap during a single season, leading to continuous infestations that complicate management efforts.

Damage caused by larvae is characterized by ragged holes in leaves. Young larvae initially skeletonize the leaf tissue, while older larvae consume large portions of the leaf, often leaving only the main veins intact. Besides defoliation, the pest contaminates vegetables with frass, significantly reducing the market value of the produce and, in severe cases, destroying the entire crop.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach to minimize crop loss. These include:

• Regular field scouting to detect egg masses and early-instar larvae.
• Implementation of biological controls, including the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and release of beneficial parasitoid wasps.
• Deep tillage and weed management to destroy overwintering pupae.
• Application of selective insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
• Use of row covers for small-scale plantings to physically exclude adult moths.
