Description
Systematic position: Trichopria drosophilae belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diapriidae. It is a solitary endoparasitoid known for its role as a natural enemy of various Drosophila species. In agricultural settings, it is primarily recognized for its ability to parasitize the pupae of the spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii).
Affected crops: This insect is commonly found in orchards and berry plantations where fruit flies congregate. Crops frequently infested by the host Drosophila species include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, cherries, and various stone fruits. The presence of the wasp is almost always associated with the presence of host fly infestations in ripening or decaying fruit.
Biology and life cycle: The adult female Trichopria drosophilae searches for pupae of the host fly. Upon finding a suitable host, the wasp uses its ovipositor to inject an egg directly into the puparium. The larval stage consumes the contents of the fly pupa. Once the development is complete, the adult parasitoid emerges by cutting a small, characteristic hole in the shell of the pupa, continuing the reproductive cycle.
Damage and economic impact: While the wasp is technically a beneficial biological control agent, it is categorised under agricultural monitoring due to the extreme economic damage caused by the host species it targets. The fruit flies cause direct loss of crop yield by laying eggs in fruits, leading to larvae infestation, rapid softening, and the development of secondary fungal rot, rendering the fruit commercially non-viable.
