Description

The cereal mirid (Trigonotylus caelestialium) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. This plant bug is a specialized pest found in many regions where various grass crops are cultivated.

This species primarily damages grasses and major cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye. It is also frequently found on various wild grasses that act as reservoirs for the pest during the off-season.

The biology of the pest is characterized by multiple generations per season. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited within plant tissues. The nymphs, which hatch in the spring, go through five instars, feeding actively on plant sap, which weakens the host plant and reduces overall yield.

The damage caused by the cereal mirid appears as discoloration of leaves and stems, the formation of light spots, and the curling of leaf blades. Tissue necrosis occurs at the puncture sites, and in cases of heavy infestation, significant grain shriveling and a reduction in product quality are observed.

To protect crops, a complex approach is applied: eliminating weeds along field margins, adhering to crop rotation, and applying insecticides during periods of peak nymph emergence. Effective monitoring of population density allows for timely decisions regarding chemical intervention.
