Silver-wedged fruit fly

Trirhithrum argenteocuneatum is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. These insects are significant agricultural pests, particularly in African ecosystems, where they target a variety of fleshy fruits. Their presence is a major concern for both local farmers and international trade due to their potential impact on fruit quality.

The host range of this pest includes various fruit-bearing plants, most notably coffee cherries and different citrus species, among others. By feeding within the fruit tissues, the larvae effectively destroy the pulp, making the produce unsuitable for human consumption or commercial distribution. The damage caused by the larvae often leads to premature fruit drop.

The life cycle of this species comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use a sharp ovipositor to pierce the skin of ripening fruits, laying eggs beneath the surface. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the fruit, consuming the pulp. Once development is complete, the larvae typically pupate in the soil, emerging later as adults to repeat the cycle.

The damage caused is characterized by visible puncture marks on the fruit skin, internal rotting, and a softening of the fruit structure. The economic impact is twofold: direct loss of yield in the field and the cost of stringent quarantine measures required to prevent the fly from spreading to non-infested areas. Secondary fungal infections often thrive in the tracks left by the larvae.

Effective management strategies include the following practices:

• Deploying pheromone or protein-based traps for population monitoring.
• Implementing orchard sanitation by collecting and disposing of fallen fruit.
• Applying selective insecticides during the adult fly emergence period.
• Utilizing biological control agents such as predatory wasps or entomopathogenic fungi.
