Description
The four-spotted fruit fly (Trirhithrum quadrimaculatum) belongs to the Tephritidae family within the Diptera order. It is recognized as a major horticultural pest, particularly impacting fruit-producing regions in Africa. Due to its life cycle, it poses a recurring challenge to farmers, threatening the quality and yield of various economically important fruit species.
The fly primarily infests a range of commercial crops, including coffee berries, mangoes, citrus varieties, and several solanaceous plants. Its ability to infest ripening fruit makes it a highly destructive agent, as the larvae consume the interior of the fruit, rendering them completely inedible and non-marketable.

In orchards with heavy infestations, fruit drop is significant, leading to severe economic losses for growers who fail to implement proactive monitoring and mitigation strategies.

These include the rigorous removal of fallen fruit to break the life cycle, the deployment of pheromone-baited traps for monitoring and mass trapping, and the strategic application of insecticide sprays.
