Description

The booklouse (Trogium pulsatorium) belongs to the order Psocoptera and the family Trogiidae. These tiny insects are frequently found in damp storage facilities, grain elevators, and pantries. Although they are often considered a nuisance in households, in agricultural settings, they are classified as significant stored-product pests.

This pest infests a wide range of stored agricultural commodities. They are commonly found in grain silos, flour mills, and warehouses containing dried plant materials or cereals. They feed on microscopic fungi, cereal dust, and various organic debris, making them indicators of poor sanitation and high moisture levels.

The biology of the booklouse is highly dependent on environmental humidity. They thrive in environments where relative humidity is above 60-70%. The developmental cycle consists of eggs, nymphal stages, and adults, with reproduction occurring rapidly under favorable temperature conditions. They are capable of infesting large volumes of stock in a short period.

Damage caused by booklice is typically cosmetic and hygienic, but in high numbers, they significantly contaminate grain and stored products with their waste, cast skins, and fungal spores. While they do not consume large amounts of grain like weevils, their presence often masks or facilitates the spread of deeper structural damage within the stored grain pile.

Control measures primarily focus on moisture management and sanitation.

  • Reduce moisture content of grains below 14% to stop fungal growth.
  • Maintain proper ventilation in storage areas to prevent condensation.
  • Conduct regular cleaning of equipment and removal of spilled grain.
  • Apply authorized fumigants or contact insecticides in severe cases of infestation.
