Hide beetles

The genus Trox, commonly referred to as hide beetles, belongs to the family Trogidae. These beetles are unique due to their specialized diet consisting of dry animal proteins, keratin, and organic detritus. While they play an essential role in nature as decomposers, in agricultural settings, they are considered secondary pests that can infest facilities storing raw materials or processed agricultural products.

These insects primarily impact stored products rather than living crops in the field. They are often found in warehouses handling animal by-products, leather goods, or mixed feed containing meat and bone meal. Their presence in grain storage facilities is often linked to poor sanitation or the accumulation of organic debris in cracks and crevices of the structure.

The biology of Trox is characterized by a slow development cycle, but the larvae are exceptionally resilient. They are adapted to survive in extremely dry environments where other insects would perish. Adults are nocturnal and often camouflage themselves with dirt and debris, which makes them difficult to spot during routine inspections of the storage area.

Damage caused by hide beetles includes structural boring into materials and the contamination of products with excrement and cast skins. While they may not be as aggressive as grain weevils, their ability to consume keratin-rich materials leads to quality degradation and financial losses, particularly in industries dealing with leather, dried fish, or meat-based agricultural additives.
