Taxonomic position: The aster fruit fly (Trupanea amoena) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. These flies are widely distributed and are known as specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Asteraceae family. Their ability to adapt to various climates makes them a persistent concern for farmers and gardeners alike.

Host crops and pest significance: This pest primarily infests plants in the Asteraceae family, including economically significant crops like safflower, sunflowers, and artichokes, as well as ornamental flowers like asters and chrysanthemums. The larvae act as seed predators, consuming the developing seeds and receptacle tissues, which can lead to substantial yield losses and a decrease in seed viability.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Trupanea amoena consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into the flower buds or young inflorescences. Once the larvae hatch, they burrow into the flower head, where they feed and develop protected by the plant structure. Pupation also occurs within the flower head, ensuring the insect's survival during its most vulnerable developmental phase.
