Long-headed grasshopper

Truxalis nasuta, commonly known as the long-headed grasshopper, belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae (subfamily Truxalinae). It is physically distinguished by its elongated, conical head and specialized camouflage coloration that allows it to blend seamlessly into dry grass habitats, making it difficult to detect in the field.

This pest primarily infests various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, maize, and sorghum. It also thrives in pasture lands where it consumes grasses. In high population densities, these insects can cause significant leaf area destruction, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity in crops and potential losses in yield quality and quantity.

The biological development of Truxalis nasuta follows the incomplete metamorphosis life cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the soil inside protective capsules called egg pods. These pods overwinter in the soil, and larvae emerge in the spring once favorable temperatures are reached, progressing through several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood.

The characteristic damage involves the jagged consumption of foliage and stems. The threat to crops typically intensifies during hot, dry growing seasons. As natural grasslands become dry or depleted, the grasshoppers migrate to irrigated or green agricultural fields, causing localized but potentially severe damage to the crops, especially in the vegetative stage.

Pest management focuses on both preventative and reactive strategies. Cultural practices, such as deep tillage of soil, are effective in destroying egg pods before the spring hatch. If chemical intervention is necessary, professional scouting should determine the pest density, and if the threshold is exceeded, targeted applications of insecticides are recommended to prevent further crop loss.
