Chrysanthemum leaf miner

Systematic position. The chrysanthemum leaf miner (Trypeta flaveola) belongs to the order Diptera, within the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). It is a specialized agricultural pest that predominantly affects plants within the Asteraceae family, with a clear preference for chrysanthemum species.

Affected crops. The pest causes significant damage to both greenhouse and outdoor chrysanthemums. By mining the leaves, the larvae disrupt the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, which directly impacts the growth rate and overall health of the flowers in commercial nurseries and private gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The adult fly lays eggs into the leaf tissue. After hatching, the larvae immediately begin to burrow into the leaf, creating tunnels known as mines. The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the insect's life cycle. Depending on the species, pupation typically occurs either in the soil or within the plant tissue itself.

Damage and pest significance. The most characteristic symptom is the appearance of winding, pale-colored tracks on the leaf surface. High-density infestations result in massive leaf necrosis, causing the leaves to dry out and drop prematurely. This leads to a substantial loss in ornamental value and weakens the plants, making them more susceptible to secondary fungal pathogens.

Control measures. Integrated pest management is essential to keep the population of Trypeta flaveola under control:

• Hand-picking and burning infested leaves to eliminate larvae.
• Application of systemic insecticides at the first sign of fly activity.
• Deployment of yellow sticky traps to capture adult flies before they oviposit.
• Cultivating and tilling the soil around plants to expose and kill pupae.
• Maintaining strict hygiene in greenhouses to prevent re-infestation.
