Systematic position. The brown babbler (Turdoides plebejus) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Leiothrichidae. These are highly social birds native to the savannahs and woodlands of Africa. While they play a role in the local ecosystem, they are recognized as significant agricultural pests in regions where they interact with cultivated lands.

Damaged crops. This species primarily targets cereal crops, causing severe damage to sorghum, millet, and maize. During the maturation phase of these crops, the birds congregate in large flocks, often stripping entire fields of their grain if preventative measures are not taken in time.

Biology and life cycle. Brown babblers are sedentary birds that live in tightly-knit family groups. Breeding typically coincides with the onset of the rainy season.
