Description

The rose leafhopper (Typhlocyba quercus) is a small insect belonging to the family Cicadellidae. Despite its common name, it is a significant pest that affects a wide range of woody plants, including various deciduous trees and fruit-bearing species throughout temperate regions.

This species causes damage to a variety of host plants, including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and ornamental trees like oak and beech. Because it is highly mobile, it can easily migrate between adjacent orchards and gardens, complicating localized control efforts.

The biology of the rose leafhopper is characterized by two generations per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, inserted under the bark of young shoots. After hatching in the spring, nymphs pass through five instars before reaching adulthood, feeding continuously on the plant sap.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing the leaf tissue to feed. This results in stippling—a pattern of tiny white or yellow spots on the upper leaf surface. Severe infestations lead to leaf chlorosis, loss of vigor, and significant premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree's health.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. It is crucial to inspect leaves for nymphs starting in late spring. If populations reach an economic threshold, applying horticultural oils or selective systemic insecticides can effectively curb the infestation.
