Description
The elm leafhopper (Typhlocyba ulmi) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a common pest found in both ornamental gardens and fruit orchards across temperate regions.
This pest primarily attacks elm trees, but it is also a well-known threat to various fruit-bearing species including apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Large colonies of these insects can significantly drain the vitality of a host plant.
The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs inserted into the bark of young twigs. In the spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding on the underside of leaves, moving through several instar stages until they reach the adult winged form.
Feeding damage is characterized by a stippled or mottled appearance on the leaves, caused by the extraction of chlorophyll and sap. As the feeding intensity increases, leaves turn yellow and may drop prematurely, which hinders the tree's ability to produce energy for the next growing season.
Effective control measures require a combination of monitoring and chemical or biological intervention. Systematic scouting during late spring is essential to time the application of insecticides correctly when the nymphs are most vulnerable.
