Description
Contrary to the status of a pest, Typhlodromips is a genus of predatory mites belonging to the family Phytoseiidae. It serves as a vital component in integrated pest management (IPM) programs, primarily used to control thrips and whiteflies in protected cropping environments.
The taxonomic classification places it within the order Mesostigmata. These mites are highly valued in commercial horticulture for their ability to thrive in greenhouse conditions, where they actively patrol plant foliage in search of prey, effectively suppressing pest populations before damage becomes visible.
The life cycle of the species consists of the egg, larva, two nymph stages, and the adult stage. The duration of development is highly temperature-dependent; under optimal conditions, the cycle is completed rapidly, enabling the population to establish quickly and maintain dominance over invading pest species on crops like cucumbers, peppers, and ornamentals.
In terms of behavior, Typhlodromips is a generalist predator. It feeds on early-stage larvae of thrips and can also consume spider mites and whitefly larvae.
