Description

The genus Urocyclus belongs to the family Urocyclidae (order Stylommatophora). These gastropod mollusks are typical inhabitants of moist biotopes, frequently found in African regions. In an agronomic context, they are considered significant phytophagous pests capable of causing substantial damage to domestic gardens and commercial agricultural production.

The range of host crops is quite broad: Urocyclus species are omnivorous, damaging almost all above-ground parts of vegetable, berry, and ornamental plants. They pose a particular threat to young seedlings of lettuce, cabbage, and various leafy greens, as well as berry crops like strawberries, where they excavate deep cavities in fruits and foliage.

The biology of these mollusks is strictly dependent on environmental humidity. Their lifecycle includes an egg stage, deposited in damp soil or under plant debris, and a juvenile stage that reaches sexual maturity rapidly. They are primarily nocturnal or active during overcast weather, which makes them difficult to detect during daylight hours.

The nature of the damage is defined by the radula, which the slugs use to scrape away plant tissues. External signs include large, irregular holes in leaves, destruction of succulent shoots, and the characteristic glistening trail of dried mucus. The harmful impact is exacerbated as these damaged tissues become entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Protection strategies involve an integrated approach: regular soil cultivation to destroy tunnels and egg clutches, and the removal of weeds and debris that provide shelter for pests. Barrier methods such as mulching with gravel or wood ash and the use of traps are effective. In cases of massive infestations, specialized molluscicides based on metaldehyde or iron phosphate should be utilized.
