Yarrow aphid

The Yarrow aphid (Uroleucon achilleae) is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is predominantly found on plants of the Asteraceae family, with a specific preference for species within the genus Achillea. These aphids are typically dark in color and form dense colonies on stems and flower buds.

The life cycle of this pest is complex and typically involves overwintering as eggs on the basal parts of the host plant. In the spring, nymphs emerge and start feeding on the developing tissues. Throughout the growing season, the population increases rapidly through parthenogenesis, producing both wingless and winged generations that facilitate the colonization of new plants.

Feeding by Uroleucon achilleae causes significant stress to the host plant. By extracting plant sap, they induce leaf curling, stunted development of the flowering stalks, and overall chlorosis. In commercial cultivation of yarrow for herbal medicine, even moderate infestations can lead to a substantial decrease in yield and a reduction in the concentration of essential active compounds.

Damage is further exacerbated by the secretion of honeydew, which creates a substrate for sooty mold growth. This fungal infection blocks the plant's stomata, impeding photosynthesis and respiration. Furthermore, like many aphid species, the Yarrow aphid serves as a vector for various plant viruses, which can cause permanent systemic damage to the crop.
