Description

Urophora christophi is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. This insect is recognized as a specialist phytophagous pest that targets the reproductive structures of plants, particularly those within the Asteraceae family.

The primary hosts for this species are various plants in the genus Centaurea (knapweeds). In agricultural landscapes, they are often found in areas where these plants grow as weeds or wild populations, potentially impacting surrounding vegetation and specialized seed crops.

The biological cycle of this fly is strictly dependent on the host plant's phenology. Females deposit eggs directly into the developing flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the receptacle of the flower head. Their feeding triggers the formation of a gall, a protective abnormal tissue growth that provides the larvae with both food and shelter until they pupate.

The damage caused by Urophora christophi results in deformed flower heads and a significant reduction in viable seed production. Since the larvae consume the developing seeds within the gall, the overall quality and germination rate of the plant's progeny are severely affected, making this pest a significant concern for seed cultivation.
