Systematic position: The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is classified within the order Carnivora and the family Ursidae. As an apex predator, its biological cycle is strictly adapted to the marine Arctic ecosystem, where it spends most of its life on sea ice.
Crops and damage patterns: In traditional agronomy, the polar bear is not considered a pest of field crops. However, in the context of Arctic experimental farming and greenhouse complexes, it acts as a physical threat to agricultural infrastructure. The damage is strictly mechanical, involving the destruction of enclosures, irrigation piping, and glass structures housing plants.
Biology and life cycle: Polar bears are solitary animals with a low reproductive rate. Their seasonal movements are dictated by the expansion and recession of sea ice. When forced to search for alternative food sources due to climate change or hunger, bears may wander into human-inhabited areas, including research or experimental agriculture stations.
Economic impact: The economic damage is indirect but severe. By damaging protective covers (glass or polymer films) of greenhouses, a bear causes the sudden loss of a controlled microclimate, leading to the rapid freezing and death of entire crop cycles. This represents a significant risk for small-scale northern agriculture.
Protection measures: Because polar bears are a protected species, lethal control is strictly prohibited. Protecting agricultural assets requires non-invasive physical and sensory barriers:

- Deployment of acoustic deterrence systems.
- Stringent waste management to prevent attracting predators.
- Strategic facility placement away from known bear migration corridors.
