Striped devil scorpion

The Vaejovis spinigerus, commonly known as the striped devil scorpion, belongs to the order Scorpiones and the family Vaejovidae. Native to the arid deserts of North America, this species is frequently encountered in agricultural landscapes and greenhouse facilities that border desert habitats. While not a herbivore, its presence affects agricultural operations.

Biologically, these scorpions are nocturnal predators adapted to dry environments. They utilize shelters such as rocks, soil crevices, and debris to regulate body temperature and moisture. In greenhouses or agricultural storage areas, they often colonize areas under containers, irrigation hoses, or stacked materials where humidity levels attract their prey, such as crickets and beetles.

The life cycle of Vaejovis spinigerus is characterized by viviparity. The female gives birth to live young, which climb onto her back and remain there until their first molt. After this stage, they become independent. Their reproductive strategy allows populations to remain stable and persist in human-altered landscapes as long as food resources remain available.

The primary economic and operational impact is not plant damage, but the threat to worker safety. Their presence during harvesting, pruning, or sorting processes poses a significant risk of stings to field and greenhouse staff. This often results in work stoppages and requires additional protective measures to ensure a safe work environment for agricultural personnel.
