Hedley's leatherleaf slug
Vaginulus hedleyi
Description
Systematic position and description. Vaginulus hedleyi is a terrestrial gastropod mollusk classified within the family Veronicellidae of the order Stylommatophora. Commonly known as a leatherleaf slug, this species is distinguished by its smooth, elongated, and leathery mantle that covers the entire dorsal surface of the body, completely lacking a shell. They typically exhibit shades of tan, brown, or mottled gray, often with longitudinal markings.
Affected crops. As a broad polyphagous pest, Vaginulus hedleyi feeds on a wide range of agricultural crops. It is particularly destructive to leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, legumes, and seedlings of various fruit crops. In nursery conditions, this slug can cause significant damage to ornamental plants, affecting both commercial value and plant vitality.
Biology and life cycle. These slugs are nocturnal, emerging in darkness to feed and retracting to moist, shaded areas during the day. Their lifecycle is highly dependent on humidity levels. Eggs are laid in clusters in moist soil or under decaying organic matter. Their high fecundity and rapid development enable them to establish large populations quickly, especially in tropical climates where irrigation supports their moist-habitat requirements.
Nature of damage and economic impact. Damage caused by this slug is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves, often consuming the entire seedling if not controlled. They leave tell-tale mucus trails on the foliage, which are unsightly and reduce the quality of harvested products. Furthermore, their feeding wounds provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, leading to rot and further yield losses.
Protection measures. Managing infestations requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
- Manual removal of slugs during early morning or late evening hours.
- Eliminating daytime hiding spots such as leaf litter, weeds, and wood piles.
- Applying physical barriers like copper tape or diatomaceous earth around sensitive crops.
- Using molluscicides (baits) containing iron phosphate, which is less toxic to non-target wildlife.
- Improving drainage systems to reduce excessive soil moisture in gardening zones.
