The Australian painted lady (Vanessa kershawi) is a species of butterfly in the order Lepidoptera and the family Nymphalidae. While often admired as an insect, in agricultural contexts, its larval stage acts as a pest, particularly during outbreaks when large numbers of caterpillars migrate through fields.

This species primarily feeds on plants within the families Asteraceae and Malvaceae. In an agricultural setting, it is recognized for causing damage to sunflower crops and various ornamental flowering plants. The presence of these larvae in high densities can significantly jeopardize the health and productivity of these specific plant hosts.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs on the host plant, and upon hatching, the larvae begin to consume foliage immediately. The caterpillars grow rapidly through several instars, with each stage consuming increasing amounts of leaf tissue, eventually pupating either on the host plant or in the immediate environment.

The damage caused by Vanessa kershawi is characterized by leaf defoliation. The larvae consume leaf tissue, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
