Vermileo vermileo is a member of the Vermileonidae family, order Diptera. Often referred to as a wormlion, this insect is a specialized predator that thrives in loose, dry sandy soils. While not a direct herbivore, its presence in agricultural settings can create significant environmental challenges.

The adult form is a delicate, long-legged fly, but the larval stage is the most notable. Larvae are known for constructing conical pits in the sand, similar to antlions, to trap small insects. In nursery settings where sandy soil mixes are used, these pits can interfere with the physical stability of young plant root zones.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are particularly adapted to arid conditions and spend significant time in their pit traps. They are highly sensitive to moisture; even moderate irrigation can disrupt their hunting behavior, leading to mortality or migration of the larvae.

The damage caused by Vermileo vermileo is indirect. As they excavate their pits, they disturb the rhizosphere of seedlings, potentially exposing roots to desiccation or creating paths for secondary infections. In high-density infestations, this can lead to uneven seedling emergence and stunted plant growth.
