Cuban slug

The Cuban slug (scientific name Veronicella cubensis) is a land slug belonging to the order Systellommatophora and the family Veronicellidae. Originally from the Caribbean, this mollusk has become a widespread invasive pest in many tropical and subtropical regions, posing a serious threat to both commercial agriculture and home gardening.

This species is a generalist feeder and attacks a wide array of plant hosts. It is particularly notorious for damaging leafy vegetables, legumes, root crops, and various ornamental greenhouse plants. Its ability to feed on almost all parts of the plant, from seedlings to mature fruits, makes it a highly destructive organism.

The life cycle and biology of the Cuban slug are centered on moisture and darkness. These slugs are nocturnal, spending their days hidden under rocks, boards, or moist debris. They lay clusters of eggs in moist soil, and under favorable conditions, the population can increase rapidly, leading to massive infestations within a short period of time.

Damage caused by the Cuban slug is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves, often leading to total defoliation of seedlings. They also feed on stems and fruits, reducing the market value of the produce significantly. Besides direct feeding, they leave behind trails of mucus that attract secondary pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, causing plants to rot.

Management strategies focus on reducing the habitat and chemical intervention:

• Removing garden debris, dense weeds, and wood piles that provide shelter for the slugs.
• Using physical barriers like copper tape or abrasive materials such as crushed eggshells around vulnerable plants.
• Employing manual collection techniques during the night or early morning hours.
• Applying certified molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is safer for the environment than traditional metaldehyde baits.
• Managing irrigation systems to keep the soil surface as dry as possible between waterings.
