The Jamaican slug (Veronicella sloanei) is a significant land-based gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Veronicellidae (order Systellommatophora). Known for its lack of a shell and distinct leathery mantle, this slug is a notorious pest in tropical and subtropical regions, posing a continuous threat to various agricultural and horticultural systems.
As a highly polyphagous species, the Jamaican slug attacks a wide array of crops. It is particularly devastating to leafy greens, such as lettuce and cabbage, as well as root crops like potatoes and sweet potatoes. Furthermore, it causes extensive damage to ornamental flowers and young nursery stock, where it can completely strip foliage and stems within a very short period.
The biology of Veronicella sloanei is characterized by high reproductive efficiency. As a hermaphrodite, every individual is capable of laying eggs, which significantly accelerates population growth in humid conditions. The life cycle involves egg, juvenile, and adult stages, with eggs typically deposited in moist, sheltered areas, ensuring high survival rates for the offspring.
The damage caused by this slug is easily recognizable by large, irregular holes in leaves and the destruction of seedling stems. Beyond the direct feeding damage, the massive amounts of mucus secreted by the slugs cover the crop, leading to contamination and the proliferation of harmful bacteria and fungi that cause post-harvest rot and plant decay.
