Verruca

The term Verruca (from Latin Verruca, meaning wart) refers to specific pathological growths or galls on plants caused by various types of pests, primarily mites and small insects. These growths are protective structures induced by the pest to safeguard themselves during their feeding and developmental stages.

Taxonomically, these pests often belong to the order Hemiptera or the class Arachnida (specifically eriophyid mites). They are characterized by their ability to inject salivary substances that alter plant hormone balance, leading to localized hypertrophy and the formation of the characteristic "wart-like" structures on leaves, stems, or fruits.

These pests affect a wide array of crops, including horticultural plants, fruit trees, and various ornamental species. The damage is particularly severe on young, rapidly growing tissue, where the formation of these galls can lead to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic area, and significant physiological stress for the entire plant.

The biology and lifecycle of these pests are closely linked to the plant's seasonal development. After overwintering in crevices of the bark or soil, the pests move to fresh growth to initiate the formation of galls. The entire lifecycle often takes place within the protection of the gall, with the pest feeding on sap or parenchymal cells until the next reproductive cycle begins.

Economic damage manifests as a direct decline in market quality for fruits and vegetables, as well as general vitality loss in woody plants. Protection strategies must be proactive. Key control measures include:

• Applying systemic miticides or insecticides during early spring migration.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches or leaves.
• Maintaining strict hygiene protocols in greenhouses to prevent pest spread.
• Monitoring the emergence of the first signs of deformation during the early growth season.
