Description
Systematic position. The whorl snail (Vertigo pusilla) is a member of the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and the family Vertiginidae. These are extremely small land snails that, despite their diminutive size, can cause significant damage to young plant tissues in specific habitats.
Damaged crops. This species primarily inhabits moist environments such as gardens, greenhouses, and moist soil patches. It poses a particular threat to young vegetable seedlings, ornamental flowers, and succulent young plants, which provide a necessary source of moisture and nutrition for these snails.
Biology and life cycle. Vertigo pusilla leads a cryptic lifestyle, preferring cool, damp, and shaded areas. They are hermaphroditic and reproduce by laying eggs in moist soil or organic debris. The life cycle is highly dependent on humidity levels, allowing them to remain active and proliferate during seasons with frequent rainfall or irrigation.
Nature of damage. The damage consists of irregular feeding holes on leaves and stems. Because of their small size, the damage may initially go unnoticed, but a large population can quickly defoliate young seedlings. Furthermore, their feeding activity creates open wounds on plants, which often serve as entry points for bacterial and fungal rot.
Control measures. Effective control involves reducing the favorable conditions for these mollusks and direct intervention:
- Regular soil cultivation to disrupt snail habitats and destroy egg-laying sites.
- Removal of leaf litter, weeds, and debris that maintain high humidity near plants.
- Installation of physical barriers like copper tape or sharp grit around sensitive seedlings.
- Application of molluscicides, specifically those containing iron phosphate, to protect vulnerable stages of plant development.
