Systematic position: The Vimba (Vimba vimba) belongs to the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. It is a freshwater fish species native to the basins of several European seas. Within an agricultural or aquaculture context, it is not considered a crop pest, but rather an aquatic species that requires careful monitoring in controlled pond environments.

Biology and life cycle: The Vimba exhibits both sedentary and migratory behavior. The migratory forms travel from saline coastal waters into freshwater rivers during the spring spawning season. They prefer areas with gravel or sandy bottoms and flowing water. Development includes a larval stage where they consume zooplankton, transitioning to benthivorous habits as adults, feeding on small mollusks and insect larvae.

Nature of impact: Vimba poses no threat to terrestrial agricultural crops. Its primary impact is within the aquatic environment, specifically in integrated pond farms or reservoirs used for irrigation. In these settings, it functions as part of the trophic chain, occasionally interacting with human-managed water structures or competing for food with stocked commercial species.

Harmfulness: The species is not a pest in the traditional agricultural sense. However, in professional aquaculture, an uncontrolled increase in the Vimba population can lead to the depletion of the natural food supply (benthos) within a pond. This competition can negatively affect the growth rates of primary farmed fish species, potentially requiring management intervention to restore ecosystem balance.
