Rose aphid

Wahlgreniella ossiannilssoni is a specialized species of aphid belonging to the family Aphididae (true aphids) within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically adapted to feed on plants within the genus Rosa, making it a common concern for rose growers and nursery managers.

The primary host plants for this species are wild roses (Rosa canina and others) and cultivated garden roses. The aphids congregate on tender tissues, such as newly emerging shoots, unfolding leaves, and developing flower buds, where they can easily access nutrient-rich phloem sap.

The biological cycle of this aphid involves rapid parthenogenetic reproduction during the spring and summer months. This high reproductive rate allows the population to expand exponentially, leading to severe infestations of host plants in a relatively short period if left uncontrolled.

Damage to the plant is characterized by the distortion and curling of leaves, stunted growth of shoots, and inhibited bud development. The aphids act as vectors for various plant viruses, and their excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
