The African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is an aquatic amphibian that poses a significant risk to industrial hydroponic facilities and aquaculture operations. Recognized as an invasive species in many regions, it acts as a pest by disrupting controlled environments and causing physical damage to the root systems of cultivated crops.
Taxonomically, it belongs to the family Pipidae, order Anura. These frogs are highly specialized for an aquatic lifestyle. They possess powerful hind limbs with sharp, claw-like nails used for maneuvering in water and digging into substrates. When introduced into hydroponic systems, this burrowing behavior often leads to the destruction of root structures, resulting in plant stress and susceptibility to pathogens.
The biology of Xenopus laevis is marked by rapid reproduction and significant dietary plasticity. The life cycle consists of aquatic stages where larvae compete for nutrients in solution, while adults are opportunistic feeders. Their ability to survive in various water qualities and withstand temporary starvation makes them extremely difficult to eradicate once they have entered a closed-loop system.
