Xestoleberis is a genus of small crustaceans belonging to the class Ostracoda and the family Xestoleberididae. While primarily known as marine organisms, specific species can infest controlled aquatic systems, such as hydroponic setups and algal culture facilities, where they act as indirect or direct plant pests.

These pests are characterized by a hard, calcified bivalve shell that protects them from environmental stressors. In an agricultural context, their presence is often linked to poorly managed nutrient solutions where organic waste accumulation provides a perfect food source for these scavengers to multiply rapidly.

The damage caused by Xestoleberis involves the mechanical grazing of delicate root tips and young plant tissues. By scraping the epidermis, they weaken the plants and facilitate the entry of opportunistic pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which eventually cause root rot and systemic plant disease.

Their life cycle includes multiple developmental stages known as instars, through which they shed their shells. They are highly resilient and can colonize new systems via water inlets or contaminated substrate. Effective management requires constant monitoring and maintaining hygiene standards within the aquatic environment to limit their population growth.

Control strategies for Xestoleberis focus on sanitation and water quality improvement. Removing organic debris is the primary method of population reduction, followed by the installation of fine-mesh filtration and UV sterilizers.
