Description

Xylena is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. These nocturnal insects are recognized as significant pests in forestry and horticulture, as their larvae (caterpillars) are active during the early spring, causing substantial damage to developing buds.

The primary hosts of Xylena include various fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry. Because the larvae emerge early in the season, they often attack trees before the leaves have fully expanded, targeting the reproductive structures of the plants which are essential for fruit production.

The life cycle of the Xylena moth involves overwintering as an adult (imago). These moths find refuge under loose tree bark, in leaf litter, or in protected crevices. As soon as temperatures rise in early spring, the females deposit eggs near the buds, and the hatching larvae immediately begin to feed.

The feeding habits of these larvae are highly destructive. They bore into swelling buds and consume the entire internal content, effectively destroying the potential flowers and leaves. In cases of high infestation, entire branches can be stripped of their growth, leading to significant yield losses and severe physiological stress on the tree.
