Description
Xyphosia miliaria is a species of fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is widely distributed across the Palearctic region and is characterized as a specialized phytophagous insect that feeds on plants within the Asteraceae family. In agriculture, it is recognized as a pest that impacts seed production in both wild and cultivated thistle-like species.
This pest primarily infests plants of the genus Cirsium, such as creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense). The larvae develop within the flower heads, feeding on developing ovaries and seeds. Due to their host specificity, the impact is generally restricted to plants in the Asteraceae family, though infestation can spill over into commercial crops if they are closely related to the natural host plants.
The life cycle of Xyphosia miliaria consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into the flower buds during their initial development phase. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the flower head, where they undergo their larval development stages. Pupation typically occurs within the infested flower head or in the soil layer directly beneath the host plant, depending on environmental conditions.
The damage caused by the thistle fruit fly manifests as a reduction in seed yield and quality. Larvae consume part or all of the seeds, leading to malformed flower heads and a significant decrease in seed viability. Under conditions of high population density, this pest can severely affect the seed production of cultivated ornamental or medicinal plants belonging to the Asteraceae family.
Control measures for the thistle fruit fly require an integrated approach to pest management:
- Regular mowing of weeds and host plants before they bloom to disrupt the reproductive cycle.
