Systematic position: The angelica aphid (Yezabura angelicae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the Apiaceae family, where it causes significant physiological stress to host plants through sap-feeding activities.

Host plants: The primary host is the genus Angelica. However, this aphid species is also documented as a pest on economically important crops such as celery, parsley, and various wild species within the Apiaceae family, making it a subject of interest in both botanical and agricultural studies.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes a complex life cycle, typically overwintering as eggs on the stalks or debris of host plants. In the spring, fundatrices hatch and initiate colonies. Through several generations of parthenogenesis during the growing season, the population can grow exponentially, leading to the production of alate (winged) forms that migrate to new host plants.

Nature of damage and harm: By feeding on the phloem sap of young leaves and flower buds, the angelica aphid induces wilting, chlorosis, and severe deformation of the growing tips. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the overall market value of green and ornamental crops.

Management measures: Controlling Yezabura angelicae requires a focus on sanitation and preventive measures. Removing crop residues after harvest is crucial to eliminate overwintering sites. In cases of severe infestations, targeted application of aphid-specific systemic insecticides is recommended, ensuring that the application timing avoids disrupting local beneficial insect populations.
