Ranunculus aphid

The Ranunculus aphid (Yezabura ranunculi) is a specialized insect species within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is primarily known for infesting plants in the Ranunculaceae family, with its host range focused heavily on the genus Ranunculus, including both garden and wild varieties.

The biology of this species is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Like many aphids, it undergoes an alternation of generations, moving from eggs during the overwintering phase to active asexual generations in the spring and summer. These insects thrive in warm, humid conditions, which facilitate the exponential growth of their colonies on fresh plant tissues.

The damage caused by Yezabura ranunculi is significant and often overlooked until visible symptoms appear. By feeding on the sap of young leaves and flower buds, the aphid causes severe chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted shoot development. In addition to direct damage, they secrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold, blocking sunlight and reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant.

Agronomic control requires consistent monitoring of vulnerable host species. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are highly recommended to keep populations below the economic injury level. This includes managing environmental factors that promote rapid aphid colonization and maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization.

Effective management practices include the following:

• Applying insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils during the early stages of infestation.
