Taxonomy. Zeugodacus calumniatus belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae, commonly known as fruit flies. This species is recognized for its significant impact on horticultural production, acting as a specialized pest in tropical and subtropical climates.

Host plants. The pest targets a variety of fruit-bearing plants, causing significant losses to both commercial orchards and backyard gardens. It typically infests maturing fruits, using its specialized ovipositor to penetrate the skin and deposit eggs into the fleshy tissue where larvae thrive.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Once the eggs hatch, larvae begin feeding internally on the fruit, causing tissue degradation. After completing their larval development, they exit the fruit to pupate in the soil, emerging later as adults to restart the cycle.

Damage and severity. Infestation by Zeugodacus calumniatus results in premature fruit drop and internal rotting. The presence of larval galleries inside the fruit renders the produce completely unmarketable and susceptible to secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens, leading to major economic losses for growers.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Control strategies include the strict implementation of quarantine measures, regular monitoring using pheromone or protein-based traps, physical removal and destruction of infested fallen fruit, and targeted application of insecticides during the adult mating and egg-laying stages.
