Description
Systematic position: Zeugodacus cucumis belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses to fruit and vegetable production in subtropical and tropical environments.
Host plants: The pest primarily targets members of the family Cucurbitaceae. Crops such as cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, and squashes are highly susceptible. Occasionally, it can also infest solanaceous plants, broadening its impact on vegetable production systems.
Biology and life cycle: The female fly pierces the epidermis of developing fruit to lay eggs inside. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the internal tissues of the fruit.
