Zeugodacus depressus
Description
Systematic position. This pest belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. The species Zeugodacus depressus is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic damage to various vegetable crops by infesting the fruits during their development.
Host crops. The primary targets of this fly are members of the Cucurbitaceae family. It poses a severe threat to crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchinis, melons, and watermelons. It can thrive in both open-field conditions and greenhouses, making it a difficult pest to eradicate once established.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside the fruit tissue using their ovipositors. After hatching, the larvae tunnel into the fruit, consuming the pulp and creating favorable conditions for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which hasten the fruit's decay.
Damage and harmfulness. The larval activity inside the fruit is the most destructive aspect. Infested fruits often show signs of premature yellowing, deformation, and rotting. In severe infestations, the entire yield can be destroyed, as the fruits become hollowed out and completely unmarketable.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to minimize the damage caused by Zeugodacus depressus:
- Sanitation: Regularly collecting and destroying infested fruits to break the life cycle.
- Monitoring: Using pheromone traps or protein-baited traps to track population density and timing of sprays.
- Crop rotation: Planting non-host crops to starve the pest population.
- Chemical control: Applying selective insecticides during the period when adult flies are most active and seeking sites for oviposition.
- Soil cultivation: Tilling the soil after harvest to expose overwintering pupae to predators and desiccation.
