Hoch's fruit fly

Hoch's fruit fly (Zeugodacus hochii) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Tephritidae within the order Diptera. As a member of this highly diverse family, it shares many characteristics with other economically significant fruit flies. Its ability to adapt to various hosts makes it a persistent threat to agricultural production in susceptible regions, necessitating rigorous surveillance and management.

This species primarily infests a range of horticultural and vegetable crops. The larvae feed internally on the fruit pulp, creating extensive galleries that destroy the tissue structure. This feeding behavior not only damages the commercial value of the crop but also invites opportunistic pathogens, leading to the rapid decay of the infested fruits before harvest.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female utilizes its ovipositor to deposit eggs under the skin of the fruit. After hatching, the larvae consume the fruit flesh until they reach maturity. Typically, they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil. Favorable climatic conditions can lead to multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by Zeugodacus hochii is severe, often resulting in complete crop loss if left uncontrolled. Externally, infested fruit may show small puncture marks from oviposition or signs of premature ripening and discoloration. Internally, the destruction of pulp renders the fruit inedible and unsuitable for transport, causing significant economic burden for growers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that emphasizes prevention and population control:
