Zeugodacus trichosanthes is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae (order Diptera). This pest primarily targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family, with a specific preference for Trichosanthes species, often causing significant losses in agricultural production areas where these vegetables are grown.
The biology of this fly is centered around its reproductive cycle. The female fly uses a sharp ovipositor to pierce the skin of young, developing fruits and deposits eggs beneath the surface. This behavior protects the offspring from external predators and provides an immediate food source as soon as the larvae hatch inside the fruit tissue.
The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Once the larvae complete their feeding phase, they emerge from the fruit and drop to the ground to pupate in the soil. Under favorable climatic conditions, multiple generations can occur, leading to a rapid buildup of the population throughout the growing season.
