Zeugodacus trilineatus is a member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that targets a variety of fruit-bearing plants. Its ability to infest ripening fruits makes it a serious challenge for commercial growers in its native and invasive ranges.

The host range of this pest primarily includes various species within the Cucurbitaceae family and other tropical fruit-bearing plants. The larvae develop inside the fruit tissue, feeding extensively on the pulp. This behavior leads to direct economic losses due to the destruction of the fruit's marketable value and quality.

The life cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female uses a sharp ovipositor to penetrate the fruit skin and deposit eggs. Once hatched, the larvae consume the fruit from within, causing discoloration and softening. After the larval stage, the insect exits the fruit and pupates in the soil beneath the host plant.

Infestation symptoms include small punctures on the fruit surface, often followed by secondary rotting caused by bacteria and fungi. Because of the rapid development rate, populations can increase significantly during the fruiting season. Prompt detection is crucial to prevent the spread of the infestation throughout the orchard or field.
