Description

The St. John's wort gall midge (Zeuxidiplosis giardi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is well-known for its obligate relationship with plants of the genus Hypericum, causing significant structural changes in the host plant's apical tissues.

This midge primarily attacks the apical buds and leaves of St. John's wort. The damage caused by the larvae results in the formation of distinct, compact galls. These structures effectively act as a nursery for the larvae, providing both food and shelter until they pupate and emerge as adults.

The biological development of Zeuxidiplosis giardi is synchronized with the growth of the host plant. Upon oviposition into the buds, the developing larvae secrete chemical compounds that induce abnormal cell division in the plant, creating the characteristic gall. This process halts the elongation of the stem, often preventing the plant from flowering.

In terms of damage, the infested plants display distorted, leafy rosettes at the tips of the stems, often resembling small cabbage heads. Such damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic area and biomass, significantly affecting the yield of medicinal crops and the aesthetic quality of ornamental varieties of Hypericum.
