Zoniopoda tarsata is a species of herbivorous grasshopper belonging to the family Romaleidae. These insects are easily recognized by their vibrant, warning coloration, which indicates their chemical defenses; they are known to sequester alkaloids from their host plants, making them unpalatable and toxic to many potential predators in their environment.

The species primary diet consists of a variety of broad-leaved plants, including many weeds and several agricultural crops. While they are native to South America, they are considered pests in areas where their population density surges, as they can cause significant damage to commercial vegetable fields, forage crops, and local greenery by consuming large amounts of foliage.

The biological cycle of this pest follows incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in the soil, protected by a specialized foam secretion. Nymphs pass through several instars, during which they grow rapidly and increase their feeding rate, often becoming more destructive as they approach the adult stage.

In terms of damage, Zoniopoda tarsata causes extensive defoliation, which severely impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis. Heavy infestations result in total leaf loss, stunted plant growth, and a substantial decrease in overall harvest yields. The visual evidence of feeding usually starts at the edges of leaves, progressing inward until only stems remain.
