The genus Zonotrichia, commonly known as white-crowned sparrows, belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Emberizidae. While widely recognized in ornithology, these birds are increasingly identified as agricultural pests in regions where their nesting grounds or migration routes overlap with intensive crop production areas.

These birds primarily damage crops by targeting germinating seeds and young seedlings. Key crops susceptible to their foraging include wheat, corn, sunflowers, and various legumes. During the early developmental stages of these plants, the birds consume the seeds, which significantly reduces plant stand density and complicates achieving the targeted harvest yield.

The biological cycle of these sparrows is characterized by high adaptability to human-altered landscapes. During the breeding season, they establish territories, but in the post-breeding period, they often forage in social flocks. This flocking behavior exacerbates the damage, as a single site can be heavily depleted by hundreds of individuals within a few days.

Damage assessment typically reveals missing seedlings and disturbed soil surfaces where the birds have excavated the seeds. The economic harm is cumulative: not only is the seed lost, but the labor and fuel costs associated with replanting and potential yield reductions can be substantial for large-scale operations.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices tailored for avian control. Effectiveness depends on the timing of intervention, specifically during the initial germination phase of the crop.
