Pasture spittlebug

Systematic position: Zulia pubescens belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cercopidae. Commonly known as the pasture spittlebug, this insect is a significant agricultural pest that causes extensive damage to forage grasses throughout its range, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas.

Affected crops: The primary hosts of this pest are various grass species used for cattle grazing. The genus Brachiaria is particularly susceptible to infestation. When these grasses are damaged, the entire livestock production system in the area can suffer due to the rapid loss of grazing biomass.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Zulia pubescens consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs are unique due to their ability to produce a protective foam, which they use to cover themselves, maintaining humidity and shielding them from predators and desiccation. Adults are highly active and capable of rapid migration across infested fields.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults cause damage by extracting plant sap. The saliva injected during feeding contains toxic substances that destroy plant tissues, leading to yellowing, necrosis, and plant death. Under heavy pressure, the spittlebug can lead to "pasture burning," where entire sections of the grazing land turn brown and cease to be productive.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Zulia pubescens.

• Application of entomopathogenic fungi such as Metarhizium anisopliae to target nymphs in their foam.
• Pasture management practices, such as controlling grazing intensity to reduce favorable microclimates for the pest.
