Zygina leafhopper

The Zygina leafhopper (genus Zygina) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small, agile insects are recognized as significant pests in viticulture worldwide. Adults typically measure about 3–4 mm in length and possess a pale, yellowish, or whitish coloration, which helps them blend in with the underside of host plant leaves.

The primary hosts for these insects are plants within the Vitaceae family, specifically grapevines (Vitis vinifera). While they are specialized feeders on grape leaves, they can occasionally be found on other woody plants in the vicinity of vineyards. Their feeding activity is most intense during the warm months, coinciding with the active vegetative growth phase of the vine.

The life cycle of the Zygina leafhopper involves the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or under the bark of vines. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and lay eggs within the leaf tissue. Depending on the climate, the insect can complete several generations throughout the growing season, leading to rapid population growth if left unmanaged.

Damage is primarily caused by nymphs and adults sucking sap from the leaf cells. This leads to the characteristic stippling or spotting effect, where the loss of chlorophyll creates small, bleached white or yellow areas. As damage progresses, the leaves appear mottled or mottled-yellow, causing early senescence, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and negative impacts on berry quality and vine sugar accumulation.

Effective management strategies for Zygina leafhoppers include:

• Implementing strict orchard hygiene, such as removing and destroying fallen leaf debris in late autumn.
• Monitoring pest populations using yellow sticky traps to determine the optimal timing for treatment.
• Applying selective systemic insecticides targeting the nymphal stages during the first generation.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lacewings and spiders within the vineyard ecosystem.
• Ensuring proper vine canopy management to reduce favorable conditions for leafhopper nesting and feeding.
